Cape Town is one of the world’s foodie hotspots, home to that perfect trinity of rich culinary culture, a deep pool of talented chefs, and a cornucopia of seasonal fresh produce. So, it was little surprise that South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ was named ‘Best City for Food in the World’ in the prestigious 2024 Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards.

“In Cape Town the city's diverse cultural influences — from African, European and Asian to Malaysian and Indonesian — come together in a vibrant melting pot of flavours that really reflect the city’s vibrant restaurant scene,” says Yassir Ebrahim, Head Concierge of Ellerman House.

From fine-dining establishments to laid-back local favourites, a passion for sustainability, seasonality and a celebration of local flavours are at the heart of Cape Town's cuisine. Here, time-honoured dishes like bobotie and waterblommetjie bredie might share the spotlight with more contemporary creations, and in Cape Town, every meal is a memorable journey of tradition, creativity and flavour.

We asked Yassir to share his favourite restaurants in Cape Town, from fine-dining stalwarts to local favourites. And, of course, the city’s most beguiling cocktail bar.

Ellerman House Restaurant

I can’t tell you about the best restaurants in Cape Town without including our own! At Ellerman House Head Chef Kieran Whyte has truly transformed the dining experience, offering what I like to call homely food in a fine dining context. Portions are generous – like a hug on a plate! – and with our lunch and dinner menus changing daily there’s plenty of choice for guests enjoying more than one meal with us. Combine that with a variety of dining spaces – I love the terrace in summer – spectacular views, and our award-winning wine list, every meal with us is a unique experience. My favourite dish is the Cape Malay- braaied yellowtail with pickled onions, crispy curry leaves and Malay aioli: it is a remarkable take on traditional Cape Malay pickled fish enjoyed around Easter.

VUE

I love this sophisticated, yet casual restaurant with stunning panoramic views of the city and Table Mountain. The space is intimate and offers a menu inspired by contemporary global cuisine, focusing on fresh flavours while championing local ingredients. With a spectacular wine list, elegant ambience and exceptional service, it makes for a perfect spot for both intimate dinners and special celebrations. Don’t miss the creative Mushroom ‘Faux-Gras’.

Bouchon Wine Bar & Bistro

This inner-city winery offers a cosy dining experience that combines French bistro charm with local flair. It’s in the heart of the city and is one of the most appealing, yet undiscovered spots. Whether you're indulging in a classic French-inspired plate or exploring the wine list, Bouchon provides a memorable experience that celebrates both food and wine in perfect harmony. I love the Sous-vide Octopus, from local waters.

Upper Union

In a heritage building just off the bustling Kloof Street, Upper Union offers a well-considered dining experience with a focus on modern, seasonal cuisine. This is a particularly good option for vegetarians, with many of the best plates – like the Fire-grilled red cabbage – happily meat-free. The team’s passion for sustainability and quality ingredients is evident in every bite, and it’s definitely among my favourites at the moment.

Zest

Mediterranean influence meets bold South African flavour. That’s the premise at Zest, a chic and modern space in Sea Point, conveniently close to Ellerman House. Start with a few plates from the outstanding crudo/cure bar, before moving onto the menu from of expertly cooked dishes from the wood-fired grill. Although located in a mall, the restaurant still offers fantastic views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

FYN

FYN has truly become a standout spot for those seeking an unforgettable culinary adventure in Cape Town. Here chefs Peter Tempelhoff and Ashley Moss combine contemporary Japanese techniques with South African ingredients, creating a truly unique fine-dining experience. The tasting menu is a celebration of bold flavours and beautiful plating, with each dish telling a story of both cultures. The rooftop setting with spectacular views of Table Mountain adds to the experience, making it a perfect place for a special occasion. But don’t go in a hurry: it can take up to four hours to enjoy the full 10-course kaiseki menu.

beyond

A wine tasting in Constantia should always go hand-in-hand with a meal at beyond, a sister-restaurant to the world-renowned FYN. Located on Buitenverwachting – meaning “beyond expectations” – the name is fitting because it is truly an experience that takes you ‘beyond’. Each dish is an artful blend of bold flavours where traditional South African ingredients are reimagined. Expect beautifully plated dishes that are as visually striking as they are delicious.

Que Linda

The hottest new restaurant in Sea Point, which is all about Spanish authenticity. Located in a cosy spot just across from the Mojo Market, the menu consists of tapas and traditional dishes with a modern twist. Dishes like Gamba Al Ajillo and Patatas Bravas are a homage to the inspiration of the restaurant. If you’re hungry, the Seafood Paella is superb.

The Art of Duplicity

Secrecy is the name of the game at this Prohibition-style speakeasy in the ‘East City’ district of Cape Town. Regularly awarded as one of the best bars in the world, this is no ordinary watering hole. Bookings are essential, and you’ll only receive the location (and password to enter) on the day of your reservation. Once you’re in, indulge in crafted signature cocktails whipped up by skilled bartenders who are happy to tailor the drinks to your tastes.
